OSIRIS-REx Spacecraft Launched Carrying EaglePicher Batteries

JOPLIN, Mo., Oct. 31, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A NASA spacecraft, OSIRIS-REx, launched September 8th in an effort to learn more about the formation of our solar system. OSIRIS-REx—an acronym for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer—will travel to near Earth asteroid Bennu and retrieve a sample that might offer insights into the history of our solar system and perhaps the origins of life. Led by the University of Arizona and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, this is NASA's third mission in its New Frontiers program.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems designed and built the spacecraft, as well as the sampling system and sample return capsule. The solar powered mission led Lockheed Martin to choose a reliable source to power the spacecraft. EaglePicher's batteries power the return capsule with two, 8-cell lithium batteries as well as the main spacecraft battery, with two identical 28-volt, 30-ampere-hour batteries with integrated battery management electronics and heaters necessary for operation in the cold extremes of space. In addition to the spacecraft and return capsule, EaglePicher also supplied Silver Zinc batteries for the on-board electronics of the Atlas V launch vehicle--used to launch OSIRIS-REx--powering multiple systems including flight termination, telemetry, guidance control, and tracking.

OSIRIS REx

OSIRIS-REx is a seven-year mission, and will be the first ever in the U.S. to carry a sample back from an asteroid for analysis.. Once the spacecraft intercepts Bennu in 2018, it will spend two years mapping the surface to determine its properties. Then in 2020, OSIRIS-REx will collect a sample of the asteroid by emitting a burst of nitrogen onto the surface to collect regolith inside the TAGSAM (the Touch-And-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism). After sampling is done, the TAGSAM head will then be stowed inside the return capsule. The spacecraft will begin its return flight to Earth in 2021. In September 2023, as the spacecraft nears Earth, it will eject the sample return capsule and then divert away from Earth.  The sample return capsule will enter the Earth's atmosphere at just over 27,000 mph. The capsule is programmed to deploy its parachutes and land softly in the Utah desert, where it will then be transported to NASA's Johnson Space Center for curation and distribution of the sample to laboratories around the world for generations of scientific analysis.

Valence and EaglePicher Technologies Announce Strategic Alliance

Austin, TX and Joplin, MO – January 26, 2016 – Valence Technology, Inc. and EaglePicher Technologies, LLC announced today that they have entered into a strategic alliance including a technology license agreement for certain Valence Lithium-Ion technology and future supply considerations. The agreement accelerates EaglePicher’s expanding Lithium-Ion based portfolio of products and applications that will be developed at its Lithium-Ion Center of Excellence in Joplin, Missouri.

Under the agreement, EaglePicher will have the exclusive right to manufacture cells for certain types of U.S. government programs and key specialty commercial applications utilizing the Valence designs and specifications, including Valence’s high-power proprietary cathode powder and cylindrical Lithium-Ion cell design.  EaglePicher also received consideration to purchase cells manufactured by Valence.

EaglePicher Licenses OneD Material’s SiNANOde™ 

 

For immediate release: Joplin, MO., January 30, 2015 – EaglePicher Technologies, LLC announced that it has entered into a License Agreement and an Engineering Services Agreement with OneD Material, to set up a new EaglePicher production facility in Joplin to produce SiNANOde™, a silicon-nanowire-based anode material for building lithium ion cells and batteries providing higher energy densities. 

 This new technology will be used in part with EaglePicher’s initiative to increase lithium ion cell production and expand the product portfolio for defense and aerospace applications.  The addition of SiNANOde™ raw material is a key component to significantly improving the performance of lithium ion cells and batteries for niche applications.

The licensed process is enabling the world’s first production of silicon-nanowire material for electrochemical energy storage. EaglePicher also licensed OneD Material’s intellectual property portfolio, which includes approximately 300 patents and patent applications covering many nanomaterial and process inventions.

United States Department of Defense Awards $22 Million to

Expand EaglePicher’s Lithium-Ion Production Capabilities

 

For immediate release: Joplin, MO – EaglePicher Technologies, LLC announced today that it has been awarded $22 million in funding under the Defense Production Act Title III Program (“DPA Title III”) for Phase II of the Lithium-Ion Battery for Military Applications (LIMA) project. 

The program goal assures the affordable production of critical items deemed essential for national defense, alleviating concerns regarding market volatility and uncertainty within the current international market for Li-Ion.  As a leading specialty battery manufacturer with a legacy of supplying U.S. military power needs, EaglePicher is poised to assist the defense industrial base by providing a timely, reliable supply of Li-Ion materials and products.

 During Phase I, competitors were required to demonstrate electrochemical cell technology capable of exceeding 250 watt-hours per kilogram at an elevated discharge rate.  EaglePicher was selected as the sole contractor for Phase II of the LIMA program.  This phase of the program provides cost-shared financial assistance to establish a production facility supporting the manufacture of raw materials, cells, and batteries utilizing this newly-developed, high-energy density formulation.

Energy Storage Professionals Assemble to Discuss How the Market is “Set to Explode”

After fuel cells failed onboard the Apollo 13 spacecraft in 1970, EPT’s silver zinc batteries provided power for the life support and guidance control systems that returned astronauts safely. High-profile missions including the Hubble Space Telescope, the International Space Station, and Mars Curiosity have all relied upon EaglePicher batteries in recent years.
