EaglePicher Technologies Closing in on 2 Billion

Cell Hours in Space without a Mission Failure

For immediate release: Joplin, MO, – EaglePicher Technologies, LLC, (EPT), a leading supplier of specialty batteries and energy storage solutions for the defense, aerospace, medical, commercial and grid energy storage markets, announced today that it is merely weeks away from reaching a major milestone.

When the United States entered the Space Race in 1958 by launching the Explorer 1 satellite, EaglePicher batteries were on board. Since then, EPT has contributed to every major US space mission, including many manned flights. After fuel cells failed onboard the Apollo 13 spacecraft in 1970, EPT’s silver zinc batteries provided power for the life support and guidance control systems that returned astronauts safely. High-profile missions including the Hubble Space Telescope, the International Space Station, and Mars Curiosity have all relied upon EaglePicher batteries in recent years. Currently, there are more than 500 spacecraft in orbit powered by EPT products, involving numerous U.S. and international missions. The total accumulation of time will exceed 2,000,000,000 hours on May 11th at approximately 23:32 CST.

"This is a very exciting time for EaglePicher. While we’re on the brink of an important milestone of 2 billion cell hours in space without a mission failure, we continue to work toward new and innovative technologies,” said Ron Nowlin, Vice President and General Manager of Aerospace Systems.   “The solutions we’re developing today were simply unfathomable just a few short years ago.”

EaglePicher will celebrate the 2 billion hours achievement at the 30th Annual National Space Symposium in Colorado Springs on May 22nd.

EaglePicher Technologies is on the forefront of numerous battery chemistries including lithium ion, thermal, silver zinc, nickel hydrogen, lithium carbon monofluoride, lithium thionyl chloride, lithium manganese dioxide, lithium sulfur dioxide, and reserve lithium oxyhalide.

EaglePicher Receives Contract from Erigo Technologies to deliver a Flexible Microgrid Energy Storage System for DoD applications

Joplin, Mo., January 8, 2014 – EaglePicher Technologies, LLC, (EPT), a leading producer of specialty batteries and energy storage solutions for the defense, aerospace, medical, commercial, and grid energy storage markets, announced today that it has been awarded a contract from Erigo Technologies LLC of Enfield, New Hampshire. Erigo’s contract, funded under the Department of Defense Rapid Innovation Fund and awarded by the U.S. Corp of Engineers on behalf of the U.S. Northern Command, calls for delivery of an innovative system employing multiple battery types and sophisticated control systems to address the frequency, duty cycle, and storage needs of the conventional and renewable power sources that make up many DoD microgrids.

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will be based on EPT’s patented PowerPyramid™ hybrid energy storage system technology which, given the power sources and load characteristics of the microgrid environment, can be tailored to quickly and smoothly compensate for load imbalances and power source interruptions. The BESS will be delivered to the Government where it will undergo testing and evaluation at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy System Integration Facility (ESIF), located on the campus of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) in Golden, Colorado. At the completion of testing, NREL will assist USNORTHCOM in putting the system into service at a to-be-determined military base.

The team will deliver a three-tiered, 300 kW/386 kWh PowerPyramid grid-tied energy storage system capable of providing grid stabilization, microgrid support and on-command power response. This three-tiered hybrid battery system was selected as the best configuration to demonstrate the functionality of the hybrid PowerPyramid system. The three tiers of batteries included in the 386 kWh BESS system will be Li-Ion, lead-acid and nickel-iron to deliver an appropriate balance of rapidly available energy and total power. The system is designed to be modular so any number of additional tiers could be added to the system at a later date.

“This is a significant contract award for EaglePicher,” stated Dave Lucero, EPT’s Director of Alternative/Grid Energy Storage. “Not only will it validate our scalable approach for smart microgrid applications, it provides a flexible solution for operations at DOD bases that struggle with electrical power disruptions.”

EPT’s patented PowerPyramid technology surpasses conventional storage techniques by leveraging complimentary benefits of diverse energy storage technologies. By integrating multiple diverse energy storage technologies into a single system, EaglePicher’s PowerPyramid can deliver the performance and cycle life of a high-cost energy storage technology at a significantly lower cost. The project team will leverage EaglePicher’s 70 years of experience in the energy storage business to provide a competitive, state-of-the-art solution to meet USNORTHCOM’s needs.

EaglePicher Technologies Awarded Lithium Ion Battery Contract from Orbital Sciences Corporation for ICESat-2 Satellite

Joplin, Mo., July 8, 2013 EaglePicher Technologies, LLC, a leading battery producer for the defense, aerospace, medical, and commercial industries, has been selected by Orbital Sciences Corporation (NYSE: ORB) to provide lithium ion batteries to support the ICESat-2 Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite based on Orbital’s LEOStar-3 design.  The lithium ion batteries designed by EaglePicher for ICESat-2 incorporate many of the design features that have been successfully utilized by Orbital in 13 of its GEOStar commercial communications satellites, the first of which were launched in 2008.

“We are honored to have been selected by Orbital as the key battery supplier for this important scientific mission that will help NASA scientists build a better understanding of Earth’s system and its response to natural or human-induced changes,” said Mr. Ron Nowlin, Vice-President of EaglePicher Aerospace and Alternative Energy Storage.  “This award demonstrates Orbital’s confidence in EaglePicher’s reliable and innovative lithium ion battery solutions provided for the aerospace industry, and builds upon the strong partnership formed by GS Yuasa and EaglePicher.”

EaglePicher’s ICESat-2 lithium ion batteries utilize GS Yuasa’s Generation III LSE134 lithium ion cells.  EaglePicher and GS Yuasa formed a strategic alliance in 2004 to provide lithium ion battery solutions for the aerospace industry combining GS Yuasa’s heritage and expertise in large format lithium ion cells with EaglePicher’s time-proven leadership in aerospace battery design, manufacturing, integration, and test.  The ICESat-2 lithium ion batteries will be designed, manufactured, and tested at EaglePicher’s Aerospace facility in Joplin, MO.  ICESat-2 is a continuation of the global time series of precision ice topography measurements initiated by the first ICESat mission. ICESat-2 will measure changes in the elevation of the polar ice sheets to understand their contribution to current and future sea-level rise. It also will characterize polar-sea ice thicknesses and global vegetation heights to understand their connections to the Earth system. The ICESat-2 spacecraft is scheduled for launch in 2016.
