Aircraft Battery History EaglePicher Technologies, LLC has a rich history of over 50 years in aircraft batteries. EaglePicher migrated from Lithium primary and nickel-cadmium batteries for avionics and data backup in the 1960’s to nickel-cadmium main starting batteries in the 1970’s to the first Lithium Ion battery for an Emergency Stair application in 2006 and our first Lithium Ion main starting battery contract in 2010. |

Aircraft Battery Safety See below video of the Explosion Containment Performance test on MAR-9516 (30 Ah, 28V) Lithium-Ion aircraft Main Engine Start Battery. This test was performed per RTCA standard DO-311, section 3.3.3 as well as FAA Memorandum ANM-113-10-004 which states the following: “When performing the DO-311 3.3.3 test, if overcharging does not create a thermal runaway, use an alternate method to create a thermal runaway. This test evaluates and validates the ability of the battery and battery system to contain a thermal-runaway event.” This memorandum clarifies the intention of DO-311 Explosion Containment Test, which is to send the battery into thermal runaway and to contain the thermal event. In addition, per destructive physical analysis it was concluded that there was no propagation to surrounding cells within the battery container during Explosion Containment testing. EPT has performed this test multiple times with the same results. For these reasons EPT concludes that even during this worst-case scenario, the MAR-9516 is able to contain a thermal event.
